New York, like all other states, has laws that require individuals in the state to pay a percentage of their income toward state taxes. There are also consumer taxes that get applied to a number of different products and services, usually to raise revenues and inhibit certain behavior. New York taxes each pack of cigarettes $1.50, eight cents on a gallon of gasoline and 11 cents for each gallon of beer. One gallon liquor gets hit with 67 cents per gallon.
