When it comes to the law, unfortunately life isn’t always sunny in the Sunshine State, even in beautiful Broward County. The good news is that Ft. Lauderdale and other nearby cities have several organizations that provide free direct legal representation for citizens who are in financial need. So, whether you are struggling with foreclosure, immigration, health benefits, or other civil law matters, there’s a good chance that a legal services organization in the Ft. Lauderdale area that can help you.
Keep in mind that Broward County is only one of the counties that makes up the Miami Metropolitan Area. If the services you need are not available within Broward County, consider searching for legal services in the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County.
L.A.S. offers representation, legal advice, and informational resources to clients with low incomes living in Broward County. Services typically address clients’ issues with children’s advocacy, foreclosure prevention, immigration, homelessness, H.I.V., and veterans’ rights. The Project is one of the more robust service projects provided by Legal Aid Service of Broward County. If you have H.I.V. or A.I.D.S. and have a household income below 300% of the federal poverty guideline, then you are eligible for free civil legal services. Participants may receive help with public benefits, discrimination, consumer debt, family law, and wills and trusts.
C.C.L.A. offers representation, legal advice, and informational resources to clients with low incomes living in South Florida. Services typically address clients’ issues with senior citizens’ rights, family law, health law, and foreclosure prevention. H.O.P.E., Inc. fights housing discrimination with a mixture of services that includes counseling, litigation, and legal referrals. If you believe that you may have been a victim of discrimination, you can file a complaint from H.O.P.E.’s website.
Women in Distress, or “W.I.D.”, offers a full spectrum of domestic violence services. W.I.D. Advocates teach victims about their rights ad community resources. The organization does not provide direct representation, but does have a network of partners that may be able to assist you.
Equality Florida operates out of the St. Petersburg area. The organization does not provide direct representation. However, as one of Florida’s largest organizations dedicated to L.G.B.T. rights, it is a good starting place to seek more assistance.
