Indianapolis Courthouses

Indianapolis, it’s the capital of Indiana and the 13th largest city in the United States. Known as the “Crossroads of America” for its numerous intersecting highways, this is a sports-minded town, home to the Colts, the Pacers, NCAA basketball, and the Indianapolis 500.

If you are a “Hoosier” with a court case in Marion County, you know there are several courthouses servicing the metropolitan area. If you have a criminal, civil, family law, juvenile, or probate matter, it’s likely in Circuit, Superior Court, or Small Claims division of Marion County.                                                                                                       

Here we’ve highlighted several key court systems you’ll most likely encounter: the Indiana Supreme Court, the 2nd District Court of Appeals, the Marion County Circuit and Superior Courts, the Indiana Tax Court, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

State Courts

  • Indiana Supreme Court

    Parking: The court is located in downtown Indianapolis. There are parking garages near the State House and limited metered street parking. Strongly consider taking IndyGo.

    Note: The Supreme Court is highest state court in Indiana and has absolute appellate jurisdiction over all trial court matters.

  • 2nd District Court of Appeals

    Note: The Court of Appeals is the second highest court and hears appeals from the state’s trial courts. The Appeals Court does not preside over any trials, only appeals. A decision by the Court of Appeals of Indiana is final unless granted further review by the Indiana Supreme Court. The Court of Appeals has jurisdiction over criminal and civil appeals from the circuit court. If you are requesting an appeal, call the courthouse directly or seek legal assistance.

    Note: The Circuit Court handles civil cases only including name changes and paternity actions. It also has appellate jurisdiction over small claims matters.

    Note: The Superior Court handles criminal and civil matters including juvenile cases, probate and environmental cases and domestic relations.

  • Drug Treatment Diversion and Reentry Court

    To be eligible for services through Drug Treatment Court, offenders must have committed a non-violent drug-related felony, with the exclusion of drug dealing.  The individual must be at least 18 years old and a resident of Marion County, have no history of violent offenses, no criminal history of drug delivery, and have no pending charges outside the county. Only the public defender or private counsel can recommend a person to the program.

  • Marion County Small Claims Court

    Note: There are several Small Claims courts in every township throughout Marion County. Click here to find one. The court only hears cases where damages do not exceed $6000. You may file your claim in any township, with the exception of landlord/tenant dispute. You must file those in the township where the property is located. 

  • Indiana Tax Court

    This is a tax court only. The court handles appeals from a final determination made by the Indiana Department of State Revenue or the Indiana Board of Tax Review, certain appeals from the Department of Local Government Finance, and appeals of inheritance tax determinations from the courts of probate jurisdiction.
